Abstract | This article describes the writing of one third-grade English-language learner (ELL) to illustrate how generous reading can provide a bridge for ELLs when their writing is not yet ready for a more judgmental reading. It presents a formalized approach that builds upon students' linguistic strengths and traces their written words to sources in the immediate context and the wider world. This methodology draws upon a sociocultural theory of language learning and poststructuralist literary theory through a close reading of texts using a multidisciplinary approach. This article describes the purpose, theory, and methods followed by examples and a discussion. (Contains 2 tables.) (As Provided). |
