Abstract	The "Great Recession" has caused a fiscal crisis in both public and private higher education that is unmatched in recent memory. Institutions' attention is focused on what they can cut out of their budgets. Student-service expenditures are often seen as discretionary in institutional budgets; they are viewed by some critics as "frills" that make no direct contribution to students' persistence in and graduation from college. These authors have demonstrated in a technical paper, whose findings are presented here, that student-service expenditures do influence first-year persistence and graduation rates of students at America's four-year colleges and universities. Moreover, their findings indicate that those expenditures matter more at institutions that enroll more students who are disadvantaged in terms of their average entering test scores and the levels of Pell Grant dollars they receive.
