AbstractIn the wake of recent tragedies, campus security has become a hot issue nationwide. Campus libraries, as traditional meeting spots for varied groups of people, are particularly vulnerable to security issues. Safety and security problems that can occur at any library generally include theft, vandalism, arson, antisocial behavior, and assaults on staff and the public. This article discusses various security measures which a library can implement for the prevention of security incidents. The authors discuss the installation of panic buttons for staff and patron security as a security measure in an academic medical library. The authors state that there are many strategies libraries might take to enhance security, from restricting access to installing high-tech security cameras to hiring security consulting firms. However, what remains key is the need for prevention. The authors stress that recognizing the risk factors and establishing prevention strategies must remain high priorities for any library environment. (Contains 3 notes.) (ERIC).
