Abstract	Nobody was more surprised than Geraldine Wriglesworth when she found herself nominated for a Star Award--the first-ever "Oscars" for the unsung heroes of the learning and skills sector. Wriglesworth started out as a part-time tutor, doing one session a week as a health and fitness instructor. Originally she had gone along to a class and the tutor identified her as someone who could go on to be an instructor. Before that she had been a mum at home with three young children. With her tutor's encouragement, Wriglesworth undertook health and fitness qualifications and began teaching. She'd had no interest in teaching as a career up to that point and no sense that she might have an aptitude for the work. Before she married and had children she had been a supervisor in a fashion store. But she overcame her initial nerves, doing a couple of sessions a week, until Wakefield Council's adult education service approached her to do some keep fit class, including one in a village pub. With typical enthusiasm, Wriglesworth used the IT skills she had picked up at a computer class to design and print up leaflets for the course, delivering them herself across the village. It was the start of a way of working--passionate, committed and community-based--which, six years on, has been recognised at the inaugural Star Awards ceremony. The new Star Awards Adult and Community Learning Tutor of the Year is now a senior health and fitness tutor, for Wakefield Community-based Centres. From the start, for Wriglesworth, it was all about engaging the disengaged and disaffected as learners. And in an area like Wakefield, with poorer than average basic skills, higher than average teenage pregnancy and areas of real deprivation, this was always going to demand real hard work and total commitment. Wriglesworth says opening up learning and career opportunities for those currently disengaged in target areas across her native Wakefield just happens to be her job. (ERIC).
