| Abstract | In this article, the author compares the functions of a graduate adult education program and a greenhouse. A graduate adult education program is a place where, like in a greenhouse, exciting new hybrids can be developed--working with people outside the school of education, in different disciplines and beyond the university's walls, sharing what they know in an interdisciplinary spirit of course development, teaching, and research. The author sees the flowers that are grown within the greenhouse as the new theories and practices that can develop inside the nurturing environment of a graduate program. Like young plants, graduate students are encouraged to grow in the safety of the greenhouse. Then, they graduate and leave the warmth of their program to be transplanted as professionals into different organizations, communities, and campuses. The author is concerned about the future of graduate adult education. Like a greenhouse, she understands that a graduate adult education program can function well when attached to a larger building that houses colleagues who are advocates of the greenhouse and understand its value. When a program is not seen as relevant and has few supportive voices on a campus, there is a great risk the program will be misused or abandoned. The author challenges her fellow graduate students not be take too much comfort in the warmth of their respective greenhouses. If they ignore the status of their programs, they might not find hospitable places to be transplanted to upon graduation. (ERIC). |
