| Abstract | This article presents the authors' comments on Crisp and Turner's (May-June 2009) research on "imagined intergroup contact" (p. 231). Its goals of reducing prejudice are laudable, especially with a motivation to "prepare people to engage outgroups with an open mind" (p. 231). The method is relatively simple, easy, and inexpensive to use. Consequently, it has a great deal of flexibility and can be fairly easily implemented almost anywhere. Furthermore, an impressive body of research shows that it often has the intended effect of reducing prejudice. Easy, flexible approaches are almost always a good start and are clearly better than doing nothing at all. On the other hand, it also reflects the widespread tendency of mainstream social psychology to focus almost entirely on individualistic intrapsychic phenomena. This article also reminds the first author (Y.-T. Lee) of the story of Nan Yuan Bei Zhe ("Destination in the South but Heading to the North") from ancient China. At the end of their article, Crisp and Turner (2009) emphasized the goal of promoting tolerance for social diversity. The authors agree, but they point out a delicious irony in such promotion.
