AbstractQuality Counts 2010 is the 14th edition of "Education Week's" annual report card on American public education as viewed through the lens of the states' education policies and outcomes. As in the past, this year's edition is built on twin foundations: (1) the detailed data collection and analysis of the Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, which mines its annual policy survey to provide comprehensive, state-by-state grading in key areas of state policy and performance; and (2) the rigorous investigation of a timely issue in education policy by the "Education Week" reporting staff. This year's special theme--the latest iteration of the national debate over common academic standards--is complemented by extensive information on each state's curriculum resources, assessments, and academic standards, drawn from the research center's annual state survey. This special issue of "Education Week" includes the following articles: (1) U.S. Common-Standards Push Bares Unsettled Issues (Sean Cavanagh); (2) A National Yardstick for Gauging Math Progress (Christopher B. Swanson); (3) Putting New Standards Into Practice a Tough Job (Stephen Sawchuk); (4) Effect of Common Standards on Publishers Uncertain (Dakarai I. Aarons); (5) State Standards Loom Large in Mass. Classrooms (Erik W. Robelen); (6) College and the Workforce: What "Readiness" Means (Catherine Gewertz); (7) State-Federal Tensions Loom in Standards Effort (Michele McNeil); (8) Debunking the Case for National Standards (Alfie Kohn); (9) We've Always Had National Standards (Diane Ravitch); (10) First, Do No Harm (E.D. Hirsch Jr.); (11) Differentiate, Don't Standardize (Nel Noddings); (12) State of the States: Holding All States to High Standards (Amy M. Hightower); (13) Methodology; and (14) Sources and Notes. Individual articles contain references, tables, and figures. (ERIC).
