Abstract | Concepts and associated statistical formulae of incidence, prevalence, and odds/odds ratios are core knowledge in epidemiology yet can be confusing for students. The purpose of this project was to develop, validate, and share one possible pedagogical technique using playing cards that could be employed to improve undergraduate understanding of foundational concepts in incidence, prevalence, and odds ratios. Baseline undergraduate student knowledge was first assessed with pre-lesson comprehension surveys; following the lesson, post-lesson comprehension surveys and lesson efficacy evaluations were given. Less than half of the students could accurately define incidence, prevalence, or odds ratios prior to the lesson, and less than a quarter could compute these values from a given data set. The percent of students able to accurately define incidence, prevalence, and odds ratios increased from pre to post (all p [less than or equal to] 0.01). Scores assessing student ability to calculate incidence, prevalence, and odds ratios from a given data set increased from pre to post (all p [less than or equal to] 0.009). Students responded positively to the pedagogical approach as indicated on a post-lesson efficacy evaluation. These results suggest that the model described here may be one plausible and novel teaching technique for improving undergraduate functional knowledge of incidence, prevalence, and odds/odds ratios.
