AbstractIn this article, the authors share some of their learning about art, aesthetics, and people's ways of living. They discuss why the renewal of professional learning is important and demonstrate how K-12 teachers can engage in this process by creating a journal of critical inquiry about their own local communities' art, aesthetics, and cultures. Traditional and idiosyncratic practices and symbolic cultures can be found in many places. Making special things are constitutive of a person's social and cultural identities. The authors argue that K-12 teachers should engage in professional renewal through critical inquiry of their local communities, because it is important to understand the symbolic cultural things, practices, meanings, and values associated with where one lives. They discuss their professional renewal or processes of learning about art, aesthetics, and cultures. They created a journal of critical inquiry as a practical, meaningful, and enjoyable assemblage of professional learning. Their critical inquiry integrated conceptual and cognitive, cyclical learning processes that included: (1) direct experiences; (2) observations and reflections; (3) deliberation and dialogue; and (4) collaborative actions. Descriptions as well as some photographs are provided in this article from their critical inquiry around the central region of the State of Wisconsin. (ERIC).
