Abstract | The role of the university president is continuously evolving as the challenges facing America's institutions and the world at large become more complex and farther reaching. With increased globalization, decreased public financial support, and more external interventions, higher education leaders must balance often competing demands representing multiple constituencies both inside and outside the institution. College and university presidents are no strangers to challenge, yet the author declares that 21st century leaders are feeling more pressure than ever to balance multiple demands. Jerry Sue Thornton and Hamid Shirvani provide additional insight and observation of emerging hurdles. (ERIC). |
