Abstract | Gandhi's inspiration, true for the individual, is also true for the lives of the higher education institutions, especially if they intend their students to be builders of sustainable local and world community, characterized by social equity and justice, economic sufficiency, and a healthy environment. If how presidents conduct their institutions and their teaching-learning processes is at odds with what they profess, observant students will feel the hypocrisy, see the irrelevancy to their world, and very likely apply whatever they've learned more or less randomly throughout their lives. For students to build sustainable local and worldwide communities, the author advises colleges and universities to mirror Ghandi's teachings and lead by example. He also shares Richland College's own performance excellence model. (Contains 2 figures and 7 notes.) (ERIC). |
