AbstractPeople from a range of government departments and from national charities and organisations took part in a project to explore the nature of society by 2026, and the implications for future policy making. "The Future of Citizenship" report describes this project, one of a series of initiatives concerned with democratic engagement. It was subsequently recommended to all government departments, and to external organisations, as a useful planning resource. Workshop participants considered four potential scenarios, each of which presents a set of hypotheses about the way in which citizens would behave and relate to each other, and to the state, and their attitudes towards society, at home and more widely. The author describes the four scenarios which are labelled (1) "Global citizens"; (2) "Charity begins at home"; (3) "Tribal politics"; and (4) "Remote self". In this article, the author stresses that, whatever the future holds for the society, adult education will have a key role in sustaining both self and citizenship, (ERIC).
