AbstractBackground: Registered nurses (RNs) with specific knowledge and skills in the care of the aged are an important component in the delivery of quality health-care (Venturato, Kellet, & Windsor, 2006). These nurses experience both fervors of being in service and labor that challenge them, but which contribute to their provision of quality health care to elders and feelings of career satisfaction to those concerned. Objective: This qualitative study is an attempt to provide a more eiditic description of what defines the fervor and labor of a select group of geriatric nurses in The Philippines. Method: Nine geriatric nurses chosen purposively from seven nursing homes at the capital of The Philippines participated voluntarily in this qualitative study. Data were gathered from semistructured interviews and were treated via repertory grid analysis. Themes emerging in this study were subjected to the member checking procedure to ensure data trustworthiness. Findings: Interestingly, nurses' fervor toward geriatric care is uniquely characterized by three dimensions: Transactional (What is in it for me?), Transformational (What is in it for us?), and Transcendental (What is in it for life?). The use of doodles in geriatric research (de Guzman et al., 2007) has once more proven its research value when it has eiditically typified the Filipino geriatric nurses' collective views of labor under three interesting conceptual clusters such as the substantial, social, and structural. Conclusion: The work of geriatric nurses is truly authentic human service. Despite difficulties and inadequacies in their work environment, it is the nurse's burning passion to be of service to the elderly, which rendered the professional practice worth pursuing and their life filled with meaning.
