Abstract | The world financial meltdown is causing a reassessment of the strong market ideology that dominated policy making since the days of Reagan and Thatcher. For universities, the issue is not whether to pay attention to market forces--most schools have no choice given that their economic viability depends on some combination of enrollments, sponsored research and the sale of other services. The question is how to give the market its due while remaining true to our academic values. Balancing academic values and market forces is not easy, as we shall see. My purpose in this essay is to provide a conceptual overview that can explain the issues and point the way toward their resolution in today's financially challenging environment. (As Provided). |
