AbstractThe modern era of accountability--"Show me what you do matters, and do it quickly"--may discount it, but, according to this author, much of an education worthy of the name acts on "time release." Many of education's effects are gradual; they are also erratic, unpredictable, conditional, circumstantial, and, ultimately, subject to too many matters of the heart and head to reproduce on a mass scale. This does little to satisfy higher education's various watchdogs and stakeholders, the vast majority of whom are increasingly impatient for linear connections between what is taught and what is learned so that economic competitiveness and other public purposes can be served. Siegel suggests that, even if legislators or the tax-paying public cannot be convinced of the legitimacy of an educational philosophy of indirectness, students should be encouraged to celebrate the value of education effects that are often clumsy, meandering, mysterious, or even at times invisible. To illustrate this point, he provides several examples of this "time release" effect, and advocates helping cultivate in students an appreciation for the delayed and circuitous effects of their education.
