Abstract | Immersion programs for teacher candidates are intended to start the process of teacher development by exposing candidates to realities and tensions of schools while giving them opportunities to create viable responses to the issues they face. Two immersion programs in Massachusetts--180 Days in Springfield and Bridges to the Future--provide new teacher candidates with a first year of teaching before they're hired as full-time certified teachers. Candidates spend a year in schools immersed in the daily realities of teaching, gaining experience with instructional planning and classroom management, experiencing the demands of motivating and engaging adolescents with academic subjects, and designing and implementing community service project with students--all "on the run, in the real" rehearsals of the roles of middle and high school teachers.
