AbstractInstruction is increasingly being delivered through distributed multimedia applications. Instruction delivered through these online environments creates robust opportunities for content presentation and learner interaction. These environments give the designer control over every aspect of the instructional experience. With some simple modifications, an interactive multimedia experience can provide data for evaluation and for research. These tools can be used to collect data on the users' experiences and record their interactions with the applications. The benefits of collecting and centralizing data are substantial to research. Research on instruction can now take advantage of both the interactive capabilities of multimedia as well as the wide distribution opportunities that the Internet provides. Learners can interact with instruction at any place and at anytime, while their performances can be easily documented for purposes of assessment and evaluation. This article presents basic strategies that can be used to assist a researcher in the creation of online experimental applications. The article also presents some issues of which one needs to be aware before starting to build a web-based experimental tool. (Contains 6 figures.) (ERIC).
