Abstract | While attending the Klingenstein Center's Heads of Schools Program at Teachers College, Columbia University, fellows studied Horace Mann's nineteenth-century vision for a "common school" that would unite all citizens; they considered whether this model is still best suited to serve a democratic society and questioned how current "school choice" between competing school models--including their own--might better serve the increasingly complex needs of students in the twenty-first century.
