Abstract | The Serve America Act was signed into law in April 2009. The Act provides for many opportunities to serve and learn for pre-college youth, college students and graduates, and even baby boomers. It dramatically increases intensive service opportunities by setting AmeriCorps on a path from 75,000 positions annually to 250,000 by 2017, focusing that service on education, health, clean energy, veterans, economic recovery, and other national priorities. The act also creates Youth Engagement Zones, defined as low-income, high-need districts in which consortia of agencies, including school systems, community-based organizations, and institutions of higher education, will receive grants to develop service-learning programs designed to engage youth in meeting the needs of their community. The author of this article explains what she thinks the higher education community needs to do next. (ERIC). |
