AbstractThis article discusses factors related to eventual high school credentials among dropouts. Using the National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88/00), the current study found that approximately two-thirds of the sample of high school dropouts eventually attained some form of high school credentials within eight years of their class graduation. Results of multiple logistic regression analysis confirm that academic performance, socioeconomic status, and the grade level at the time of dropout were significantly related to eventual school completion among dropouts. Unique features of this study are regional differences in the rates of eventual high school completers among dropouts and the impact of hours spent doing homework and hours spent watching TV on degree attainment among dropouts. This study suggests that the dropout event should be understood as a part of normal life process for some students, instead of the end of an educational pursuit. These findings also serve to highlight the policy and research significance of the ultimate high school completion of dropouts in addition to existing prevention efforts. (Contains 3 tables.)
