| Abstract | The name Alcott is familiar and associated with author Louisa May Alcott and Transcendental philosopher/educator Amos Bronson Alcott. Yet the literary world has come to know May Alcott not for the talented artist she was, but as Amy, the spoiled, artistic character in Louisa's novel "Little Women". May Alcott Nieriker is worthy of investigation, however, since her personal experiences inspired her to write an advice guide for female art students who traveled to Europe during the late nineteenth century. Through the analysis of primary and secondary documents, this article examines another dimension of women's art educational experiences as well as May's contributions to art education and female studies as evidenced in her manual, "Studying Art Abroad, and How to Do It Cheaply" (1879), which historians Borzello (2000) and Chadwick (1996) both recognize in their respective works on women artists. The author discusses the recognition of May Alcott's talent, her life work and her guidebook which can be considered a contribution to a "national heritage in the art world" and in education. "Studying Art Abroad" adds to an understanding of a past milieu and gives insight into values of the times as it is described from the unique perspective of a nineteenth century female artist.
