Abstract | One of the most consistent messages one hears from veterans on campus is the need for a strong sense of community and belonging. St. Cloud State University (SCSU), part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system (MnSCU), is collaborating with the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) and the SCSU Student Veterans Organization to help develop this community. The work of these three entities is designed to provide a seamless integration of services to veterans on campus. Personnel from MDVA-Higher Education Veterans Programs worked with staff and faculty on campus to help implement veteran-friendly policies and procedures for the entire state college and university system. The term "veteran-friendly" refers to marked efforts made by individual campuses to identify and remove barriers to the educational goals of veterans, to create smooth transitions from military life to college life, and to provide information about available benefits and services. Addressing the needs of this unique student population required the joint efforts of MDVA, MnSCU, the University of Minnesota, private colleges, the Minnesota Office of Higher Education, the governor, and the legislature. This chapter discusses the background and response of SCSU and MDVA-Higher Education Veterans Programs to the needs of returning veterans for successful adjustment to and reintegration into campus life. For the purposes of this chapter, the term "veteran" refers to veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their families. (ERIC). |
