Abstract | In spite of the renaissance of the religious worldview, practical experience provides evidence that the level of morality and spiritual life in society is not rising. Quite the contrary, in fact: people are witnessing the extensive spread of various forms of deviant behavior, especially among young people. In the sociology of religion a great deal of thorough research is being done on the various aspects of the influence that the religious and moral factor has on various areas of people's life and activity. In spite of its timely relevance, however, the problem of determining the worldview of young people has yet to be adequately explored. The issue is complex and multifaceted, and is practically impossible to resolve within the confines of one single science. Since worldviews are conditioned organically by economic, social, and psychological factors, the use of comprehensive and integrated approaches is required. The author of the present article has attempted to investigate the problem of the religious and moral determination of young people using methods of applied sociology; this is of crucial importance from the standpoint of a social diagnosis of the problem and the task of determining the quantitative characteristics of the phenomenon. The focus of the study was college students in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Another purpose of this study was to determine young people's religious beliefs and level of trust in the institutions of the church and the clergy, and also the extent of their observance of religious rituals and corresponding norms of behavior. In addition, their worldview attitudes in regard to the basic universal human moral principles and deviant behavior were explored. Data show that a very small percentage of young religious believers observe religious rites. No substantial differences are found in views of Christians, Muslims, and representatives of the other faiths. (Contains 6 tables and 11 notes.) (ERIC). |
