Abstract | In this chapter, the historical roots of contemporary Practice Theory are unearthed in the work of semioticians, philosophers, and anthropologists. Saussure's semiotic theory is contrasted with that of Peirce, and the importance of Peirce's work for understanding the context of signs is stressed. The philosophy of language in the writings of Wittgenstein, Austin, and Searle is plumbed for a theory of the relationship between language and context. Contemporary writings by linguistic anthropologists Malinowski, Firth, and Mitchell are reviewed to establish the concept of "context of situation," and Hymes's application of the methods of ethnography to communicative events is discussed in detail. The foundations of modern Practice Theory in anthropology as an attempt to explain cultural reproduction in the minutiae of social interaction are located in the work of Bourdieu and Sahlins, and an example of the application of Practice Theory is provided.
