AbstractThe Chinese news media have a name for the craze that has gripped students here in the past few years: "overseas-study fever." And despite the worsening global financial crisis and a slowing domestic economy, it shows little sign of letting up. Recruiters say a high household savings rate, a difficult job market, and a steady currency, the yuan, combine to keep foreign study popular in China. That is a significant difference from India, where students who rely on loans to pay overseas tuition have had difficulty securing credit, and from South Korea, where the plummeting won has made Western education increasingly unaffordable. Such troubles suggest a decrease in applications from those two countries to study in the United States this fall. One possible reason for the continued high interest for Chinese students is also a poor domestic job market. With unemployment among recent college graduates at 12 percent, many middle-class students see going abroad as a way to improve their competitiveness. (ERIC).
