Abstract	In this article, the author offers a personal view on the meaning of "teaching excellence" in higher education which makes connections with the particular historical moment people are living through--which has been variously described as "post-traditional", "postmodern", or "reflexive modernity". The author feels some urgency in giving his views since the concept of excellence has come under attack recently, particularly in the UK. His view is based on the contribution he made to a debate in his own institution and ideas that emerged in discussions with participants about the meaning of excellence. In the light of these discussions he wants to argue that "teaching excellence" can be distinguished from "everyday" teaching in higher education. For him "excellence" can only follow from a serious commitment to the reflexive development of a value-laden and morally defensible practice. (ERIC).
