Abstract | This article presents a review of three chapters in "Part I, Section B: Managing Curriculum" of "The SAGE Handbook of Curriculum and Instruction" (F. M. Connelly, M. F. He, J. I. Phillion, Eds.; Sage Publications, 2008). The author finds that these chapters ["Structuring Curriculum: Technical, Normative, and Political Considerations" (Kevin G. Welner, Jeannie Oakes. Chapter 5, pp. 91-112); "Curriculum Implementation and Sustainability" (Michael Fullan. Chapter 6, pp. 113-122); and "Technology's Role in Curriculum and Instruction" (Barbara Means. Chapter 7, pp. 123-143)] offer readers solid reviews of the various ways curriculum has been structured and organized, the varied and complex barriers to changing educators' beliefs and actions and reculturing a school, and the evolution of technology in relation to curriculum. Sloan observes that in each of the chapters, the authors discuss current as well as seminal research in their respective areas. In the Welner and Oaks chapter and in the Michael Fullan chapter, the authors argue that managing the curriculum-as-written involves navigating complex normative and political terrains. In the Fullan and Means chapters, the authors address complex issues of fidelity with regards to managing the curriculum-as-enacted. (ERIC). |
