AbstractLike many institutions of higher learning, Hocking College has struggled to define, document, and assess those general skills deemed necessary for success in the workplace and life. An opportunity for Hocking College to focus on this task was provided through its participation in the 21st Century Learning Outcomes Project sponsored by The League for Innovation in the Community College. The League for Innovation suggested that the 21st Century Learning Outcomes project address five Ds: (1) define; (2) develop; (3) deliver; (4) document; and (5) disseminate. Hocking had defined and revised a list of eight Success Skills prior to the start of the project. Work continues on developing program/discipline curricular components for Success Skills. Rubrics have been designed for five Success Skills and final development of the remaining three is expected by the end of Spring 2003. Many Success Skills are being delivered through curriculum, instruction, and co-curricular activities. All programs integrated two required Success Skills with entering students during 2002-2003. Three more Success Skills will be integrated in 2003-2004 and the final three will be added 2004-2005. Work continues to identify and implement best practices and multiple models of delivery. Documentation of each student's level of mastery will be accomplished through the use of artifacts and evidence in an e-portfolio. At the conclusion of the student's Hocking College experience, an e-transcript will serve as the official summative record of faculty assessment of individual student skills. Furthermore, the data and artifacts collected will be used for both program and institutional assessment. The project has been disseminated not only on the campus community but also at the state and national level. (Contains 1 table.) (ERIC).
