Abstract | The main purpose of this study was to shed some light on the effect of socialization context (home vs. orphanage) on gender-specific value acquisition. With this aim value preferences and collectivistic attitudes of institution-reared and home-reared teenagers (14-20 yrs.) were compared. Teenagers from ordinary homes were found to score high on Power, Self-Direction, and Achievement, and low on Tradition, compared with their institution-reared peers. There were no significant gender differences in the value preferences of institution-reared teenagers. At the same time, boys living at home scored significantly higher than others on Power, and lower on Conformity. Institution-reared boys had the highest scores on all subtypes of collectivism. The results are discussed in respect of family influence and gender differences in value acquisition. (Contains 1 table and 2 figures.) (As Provided). |
