AbstractStudent-centered tasks, such as having students select vocabulary to be learned, offer one way of supporting both content area learning and independent word learning. The underlying foundation of these tasks is the vocabulary terms and phrases that students personally deem important for understanding what is read. With this in mind, the authors decided to use this vocabulary self-selection instructional perspective with eighth grade students as part of a Holocaust unit. They studied the nature of their word choices and developed a student-centered instructional framework based upon their vocabulary selections. This instructional framework for implementing vocabulary self-selection provides a multilevel approach to addressing the needs of all learners, particularly struggling readers. Students engage in individual, small-group, and whole-class activities throughout the unit. The purpose of this article is two-fold: (a) to share the findings of a study that documented how students determined the important words to know in an expository passage; and (b) to present the instructional framework implemented in the study for helping students learn new words and concepts. This article begins by providing the research-based rationale that guided the development of this instructional inquiry. (Contains 8 figures.) (ERIC).
