Abstract | In this article, the author describes how he co-teaches an interdisciplinary American Studies class that fosters inquiry and reflection on the complexity of an authentic telling of US history. With the help of his partner, a social studies teacher, the author designed an American Studies course that aims to reveal to students that America's overall narrative features a collage of stories that will, and should, produce the gamut of emotions in the individual who is willing to seek out these narratives. To meet this goal, the author used "competing narratives," narratives that offer multiple perspectives on America, as the best route to take in giving students authentic tools for deciphering what truly constitutes the American experience. Students study competing narratives that incorporate cultural experiences outside the dominant narrative. (Contains 1 figure and 3 notes.) (ERIC). |
