AbstractPeople at the Quality Improvement Agency (QIA) are focused on the adult learning experience wherever it takes place--in classrooms, workshops, training centres, community centres, or at work. They exist to help those who teach to be better at what they do--and those who lead and manage to encourage this improvement--so that learners can receive a better experience. Their mission is to facilitate and champion excellence and innovation in the system, and as part of that they aim to promote a culture of continuous improvement. They understand that making improvements in the adult learning sector depends to a large degree on the staff working in it--they are the experts and have good ideas about how learning can be delivered more effectively. One way in which QIA is enabling managers and practitioners to learn from each other and bring about change in their organisations is through the Excellence Gateway, their new, web-based portal. What makes the Excellence Gateway unique is that it brings together a wide range of good practice resources and knowledge from across the further education system in a single, online service. It also allows managers and practitioners to improve their skills and professional knowledge by participating in and learning from a network of practitioners' communities and forums. The portal holds a repository of thousands of easily-searched case studies and good practice guides, including the entire contents of ACLearn, the learning resource website for the adult and community learning sector, and the Ofsted (formerly ALI) Good Practice Database.
