Abstract | This September saw the start of Back on Track, a pioneering pilot course for young people with mental health problems who would like to return to learning or work. The course is being run in Portsmouth by local further education (FE) colleges, with Highbury College the main provider, in collaboration with Headspace, the Portsmouth City Mental Health Service Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) team. It is hoped that this groundbreaking partnership will enable learners to achieve both educational and therapeutic goals and maintain their vocational roles and aspirations. In this article, the author sets out the need for early intervention for young people in mental distress, and the barriers they may encounter when trying to access conventional education or training. The author also discusses the role of supported education in recovery and describes how the Back on Track course was developed, including details of the planned format and expected outcomes.
