Abstract | It was heartwarming to see so many states, school districts, and communities throughout the United States open their doors to the children of Katrina. This response was a graphic portrayal of the spirit of volunteerism, the value of the more able assisting the less fortunate, and the sense of altruism that surfaces when major crises occur. However, the initial generosity did not prevail. Nor was it of a magnitude to meet the needs of the estimated 500,000 students displaced by Katrina. It was impossible for the receiving schools and districts to anticipate they would need to accommodate so many new students and without any time to prepare for their arrival. This article discusses some of the major problems regarding educational issues of the displaced students. (ERIC). |
