Abstract | As the 25th anniversary of the publication of "A Nation at Risk" is observed, it is worth recalling what more than one commentator noted as the document turned 20: it was the first in a long line of reports that surfaced during the 1980s, many of them published within months--sometimes days--of the 26 April 1983 unveiling of "A Nation at Risk." A cacophony of dueling findings, recommendations, and conclusions, coupled with the incessant beat, beat, beat of the presses as reports were issued, pounded out a new tune for public schooling in America. An education system that had once sought to "Americanize" boatloads of Southern and Eastern Europeans whose languages, customs, and mores were at odds with those of the cultural mainstream; a system that had provided skills for the lower tiers of a rapidly expanding industrial work force and even adopted its own version of mass production; a system that had broadened access across racial and economic boundaries now confronted for the first time the need to create schools that sought "excellence." The author argues that, despite all the reports, American schools still are searching for a way to achieve excellence. (Contains 3 endnotes.) (ERIC). |
