Abstract | This article features university architect Ron McCoy and describes his work at the Arizona State University (ASU). McCoy, now on his fifth year of overseeing construction on all four Arizona State campuses, came to ASU 14 years ago as a professor and director of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. He was thinking seriously about returning to private practice when university president Michael Crow arrived with an ambitious plan to "blow up the status quo" and remake Arizona State as a champion of social, cultural, economic, and environmental advances. Not long after, Crow appointed McCoy as the first university architect at ASU, which now enrolls about 65,000 students. McCoy's job is described as basically "figuring out how to manifest the values of the president and the university in the physical environment." (ERIC). |
