AbstractSetting high expectations, promoting academic excellence, encouraging students to set their sights on postsecondary education--administrators and teachers are quite familiar with these ideas and their use within the school setting. Although each of these ideas is important to what secondary education is and should be, it is somehow hard to imagine that they have much resonance for a sixth-grade student who is homeless, a student who went to bed hungry and comes to school the same, an 11-year-old student who wakes up at 5:00 a.m. in a dark house and must get ready for a ninety-minute bus ride to school without electricity or running water, or a student whose parents never made it out of high school with a diploma in hand. Given these circumstances, discussions of academic excellence and aspirations seem somewhat, well, academic. In many rural and urban areas, high poverty and geography lead to such situations. The principals of students in those situations must struggle to find ways to light the "fire" and to help those students see education as the means to a better and potentially more fulfilling life. At Rowan County Middle School, in order to build rapport with families and to get a better idea of their students, educators started a tradition of home visits. (ERIC).
