Abstract | More than 130 faculty members and athletics administrators from some of the country's largest universities gathered in Washington, D.C. last week to discuss the relationship between faculty members and intercollegiate athletics at what organizers said was the first national forum dedicated to the topic. During a series of panel discussions, participants in the Faculty Summit convened by the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics grappled with such issues as how and whether faculty members should be involved with the sports programs at their campuses; how professors could collaborate with coaches and sports administrators to help athletes perform well in the classroom and on the playing field; and how to maintain academic rigor and integrity at institutions also known for high-profile athletics programs. An additional 350 people joined the summit via a live Webcast. (ERIC). |
