Abstract | For the past three years, the "Comparative Education Review" ("CER") has published annual bibliographic essays reflecting the changes in the field over the previous year. This year, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES), the author analyzed "CER" bibliographies since 1959, in addition to offering a bibliography for 2006. The "CER" bibliography references articles published during a calendar year in journals (other than "CER") that are likely to interest "CER" readers. When compared to past "CER" bibliographies, a 10 percent decline in entries for the 2006 "CER" bibliography may be cause for concern. The only other year in which the "CER" bibliography experienced a decline was from 2002 to 2003. In some categories of the bibliography, the reduction of articles continues a decade-long trend, whereas decline in other categories is more surprising. The value of the "CER" bibliography is to document the type and popularity of article themes that are published in the field at large and, thus, to indicate the changing emphases in the field. In this essay, the author emphasizes five bibliographic elements that parallel the development of the CIES: (1) changing structure of bibliographies over time; (2) devaluation of theoretical/methodological articles; (3) change in geographical regions; (4) thematic representation; and (5) unique features of the 2006 bibliography.
