AbstractIt is commonly believed that today's young college and university students possess an "advanced" market mentality and show a degree of adaptation to market conditions that is higher than in the older generation. Those who share this point of view assert that the market is fundamentally changing the structure of people's thinking, knowledge, attitudes toward values, strategies of behavior, and so on. In a number of other studies, doubts are expressed as to the degree to which the "market mentality" has been fully shaped. In this paper, the author attempts to clarify this situation, drawing on 1998 sociological surveys of 1,000 college students in five higher educational institutions in Voronezh. A quota sample was used, based on social and demographic indicators (sex, year of study, and profile of training). In 2003 a follow-up study was carried out with the same focus and a similar quota sample (N= 960); the focus was on students' value orientations. The author concludes that a substantial portion of young people exhibit a nonmarket type of thinking and nonmarket forms of behavior. They are choosing a path that "leads nowhere" and are dooming themselves to not being in demand or ending up with a low standard of living, while hoping for a "miracle," for help from someone else, or for later requalification. Some of the results are summarized at the end of this paper. (Contains 2 tables.) (ERIC).
