Abstract	In this article, the author describes "Primary Supervision", a seminar he has led for approximately 20 years, which is designed for the entire class of nine first-year residents in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry training at Massachusetts General Hospital. The seminar meets for 1 hour each week throughout the first year. Through 900 hours of discussion with more than 100 residents, a curriculum has emerged that may be worthy of consideration by other programs, supervisors, and residents. All programs address the core objective of primary supervision, which is to facilitate the professional identity of a physician making the transition from general psychiatry residency to child and adolescent psychiatry. Certainly, patient care experiences, supervision, and seminars promote this professional transition. However, in the first year of training, the residents' (anonymous) feedback indicates that a seminar devoted to wrestling with some key professional issues facilitates their emerging professional identity. Primary Supervision emphasizes the techniques, prioritization, tone, language, internal consistency, and use of the evaluation report, and devotes less time to the diagnostic and treatment issues that are covered in one-to-one evaluation supervision.
