Abstract | This article talks about the "Pay-to-play" issue in some districts. State constitutions across the nation include guarantees of "free public education." Simply put, that means that school programs may not charge fees for participation. In this article, the authors examine the issue on whether extracurricular activities are integral parts of the school program or whether they fall outside the bounds of a free education because they are voluntary in nature. The authors then suggests that school leaders should avoid the temptation of resorting to threats that, without fees, school sports will have to be canceled. Instead, schools should look for solutions that will evaluate the central purpose of schooling and support those programs accordingly. (ERIC). |
