Abstract | Some students show a lot of artistic talent. Astounding sketches of a Mini Cooper done with a pen in an English-composition spiral-bound notebook scream talent and success. But teachers, parents and guidance counselors want to help artistically talented kids avoid the macaroni-and-cheese existence common to aspiring artists--working just to make the rent money through low-paying service jobs. One career option they can suggest is the field of automotive design. Automotive design is but a small sliver of the wider field of industrial design, which encompasses everything from the flowing surfaces of a sports coupe's seductive curves to compact modern gadgetry like iPODs, wireless cards and telephone headsets. Industrial designers now use design modeling software to easily shape and refine 3D objects. The software enables a design process more closely reliant on the user's natural intuition, imagination and spatial reasoning. Students can benefit from using a combination of the latest technology and the traditional pencil-to-paper route of drawing, rendering, and shading. (ERIC). |
