Abstract | Like many schools in the United States, Delcastle Technical High School in New Castle, Delaware, has felt the pain of falling enrollment in its welding and fabrication program. At one point, the program had shrunk to just 19 students and, as a result, could not produce enough graduates for local businesses that relied on Delcastle graduates. It also could not offer students a quality program, given a lack of adequate funding. Delcastle faced a cyclical problem with no clear-cut solution. Without an increase in students, funding would not increase, and, therefore, no improvements to the program could be made. Conversely, without program improvements, students would not enroll. In September 2001, welding and fabrication instructor Doc Stanaitis came into the picture at Delcastle. He has created a great program for the students at Delcastle. This article describes some of his successful efforts. As this article shows, technical schools like Delcastle Technical High School, welding equipment manufacturers and their distributors can play a key role in addressing the shortage and reversing the downward spiral.
