Abstract | Early childhood educators must realize that children are in their care at a critical time. Children learn to make decisions and develop the foundation for a healthy lifestyle during their early years. Many children spend a large number of their waking hours in early childhood settings. Family lives are very busy, and it is understandable that some parents may be attracted to the use of convenience foods for meals and television as an in-home babysitter. Educators can help by partnering with families to make changes to foster good health habits and fight obesity. In this article, the authors describe how they developed a holistic program approach to fighting the causes of obesity in young children. The project, Health in Action: Five Simple Steps to Better Health, pairs nutrition goals with physical activity goals, reinforcing the fact that a healthy lifestyle requires attention to both eating and activity habits. Family involvement is critical. The project's success shows that early childhood educators and families can put healthy concepts into action. (ERIC). |
