Abstract | This update reports on the activities of the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE), which includes the implementation of the new Perkins Vocational Education Act passed by the 109th Congress and signed by President Bush on August 12, 2006. There is also significant activity in preparation for the scheduled reauthorization of the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (Title II of the Workforce Investment Act) during the 110th Congress. The Department of Education is focusing increasing attention on issues of higher education. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings appointed a commission to undertake a major review of postsecondary education in September of 2005. She accepted their report one year later, announcing plans to move toward significant higher education reforms in a speech before the National Press Club in Washington, DC, on September 26th. Access, affordability, and accountability are the three principles informing these initiatives. OVAE will be particularly involved in these initiatives as they pertain to the promise of America's technical and community colleges. Five new Department of Education sponsored correctional education "technical assistance" projects that will be undertaken over the coming months are also discussed. (ERIC). |
