Abstract | The current paper provides a description of instructional approaches for teaching mathematics to secondary students with learning disabilities (LD) and emotional disturbance (ED) within juvenile correctional schools. Recommendations for math instruction are based on a comprehensive review of the literature and examples are provided from an urban juvenile correctional facility school for committed youth. Six key topics are presented: (a) advance organizers; (b) direct instruction (di); (c) use of technology and real-world problem solving tasks; (d) use of varied student grouping; (e) presenting information in a graduated instructional sequence; and (f) strategy instruction.
