Abstract | There is no one intervention that promotes a supportive learning environment in every setting, but research has revealed some of the organizing principles that support substantive school improvement efforts (Cohen, 2006). A school climate assessment provides an opportunity to engage in many of these school climate improvement efforts, although it is simply one step in the ongoing process of school improvement. The process itself is the greatest educational tool a school can use and is more effective than any individual assessment tool. Assessment has always been a part of teaching and learning. School climate assessment has the potential not only to support understanding about what the schools' strengths and challenges are, but also to promote student voice, foster community building, and build a foundation for evidence-based action planning to take place.
