AbstractDuring the last two decades, the number of K-12 school partnerships with businesses, communities, and universities has expanded rapidly. Schools have established successful collaborative partnerships with private enterprises to provide technology to families (Cirone, 2001), with universities to develop new teachers (Fisher, Frey, & Williams, 2003), and with community partners to create family services (Sanders, 2001). The most successful partnerships are carefully designed to meet the needs of all participants. The principal, as the public face of the school, is an important player in fostering successful collaborative partnerships. School collaborations reinvent and redefine both partners, but principals must ensure that partnerships actually transform their schools and add value rather than drain resources and divert attention from problems. Partnerships must be fully integrated into a school's reform efforts to be truly successful. The basic principles of design--balance, emphasis, proportion, and rhythm--explain how transformative collaborations achieve a unity that benefits both partners.
