AbstractFrom 1912 to 1975 the Department of Extension at the University of Alberta provided an impressive range of programmes and services to people across the Canadian province of Alberta. The four Directors of Extension at the University of Alberta during this period became leading figures in the history of adult education in Canada. They positioned their department in terms of making three contributions to society: extending the resources of the university for the benefit of citizens, fostering social and economic progress, and meeting the learning needs of individuals. Each of these contributions was claimed to strengthen the University of Alberta, largely through cultivating public support for the institution. This article narrates the evolution of claims regarding the role and impact of the Department of Extension. It argues that the claims made by the four Directors of Extension were influenced by ideological and political-economic changes that took place in Alberta and elsewhere over the course of the 1900s. Through theoretical analysis and empirical evidence, the article encourages readers, with interests beyond university extension in Canada, to critically reflect upon the position of adult education in societies and institutions.
